Hysterectomy Q & A

What is a hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure that removes the uterus in a woman. You might choose this minimally invasive surgery for numerous reasons. Each year, about half a million women undergo a hysterectomy. It’s the second most common procedure for this population group after a cesarean section (C-section).

What are the different types of hysterectomies?

Burlington OBGYN Associates Inc. offers an array of hysterectomy procedures, including a total hysterectomy that removes your entire uterus and cervix; this is the most common type.

A partial hysterectomy removes only your uterus but leaves behind the cervix.

During a radical hysterectomy, your women’s health specialist removes your uterus, cervix, and part of the vagina.

Who may be a candidate for a hysterectomy?

Your provider might suggest you undergo a hysterectomy if you develop:

  • Adenomyosis
  • Endometriosis
  • Abnormal uterine bleeding
  • Painful periods
  • Uteran, ovarian, cervical, or endometrial cancer
  • Prolonged menstrual bleeding
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Uterine prolapse
  • Uterine fibroids

You may be able to choose other treatments instead of a hysterectomy, especially if you want to have children in the future. A hysterectomy permanently prevents pregnancies.

Is a hysterectomy right for me?

To determine if you’re a hysterectomy candidate, your provider discusses your symptoms, medical history, treatment preference, and goals. They complete a physical exam, pelvic exam (with a Pap smear if needed), and possibly blood testing, urine tests, hysteroscopy, an ultrasound, or other imaging procedures. Your provider discusses all of your treatment options with you.

What should I expect during a hysterectomy?

Hysterectomies often take between one and four hours, but the exact duration depends on the type of procedure you undergo.

Properly prepare for the procedure by following all instructions. You may need to stop taking certain medicines, make arrangements for someone to drive you home afterward, and avoid food and drink the morning of surgery.

You often receive general anesthesia to help you fall asleep before your surgery. Your specialist might make an incision to remove your uterus or remove it through the vaginal canal. They close any incisions and take you to a recovery area.

What happens afterward?

You might go home the same day as your surgery or stay in the surgery center for a night or two. Follow your post-care instructions to ensure exceptional healing. Take it easy, use medicines as directed, and follow up with your Burlington OBGYN Associates Inc. specialist as instructed.

You might require hormone therapy after undergoing a hysterectomy. Slowly ease back into physical activity, work, and sexual activity after being given the OK.
