Laboratory Services Q & A

What are laboratory services at Burlington OBGYN Associates?

Laboratory services at our location make it extremely convenient for our pregnant and gynecology patients to get lab work done without having to visit multiple locations. Our providers may recommend blood draws, urine samples, etc. which can be conveniently collected at our location. Samples are then tested at Winchester Hospital labs and our providers will review the results of the tests with you.

What gynecological conditions require laboratory services?

Testing samples is fundamental to most gynecological care. Examples of times you benefit from lab services include:

Pap smears

Pap smears are screening procedures for cervical cancer. Your gynecologist inserts a swab into your vagina and swipes it over the cervix to collect some cells. The cells go to the lab for analysis to determine if any are abnormal.

Cervical biopsies

If you have an abnormal Pap smear, you undergo a colposcopy to examine the cervix more thoroughly. Your gynecologist can take a sample (biopsy) for lab analysis during a colposcopy if they see any abnormal tissue.

 Infertility evaluation

If you have trouble conceiving, blood tests can identify numerous problems that could affect your fertility, from nutrient deficiencies to hormonal imbalances. Certain tests can be done through our labs while more advanced tests may require referrals to reproductive endocrinology specialists.

Sexually transmitted disease (STD) testing

If you have STD symptoms, our laboratory services can determine the cause and ensure you get the correct treatment.
