Cervical Cancer :Early Detection & Prevention

Early diagnosis and prevention of cervical cancer rely on three pillars: HPV vaccination, routine screening, and awareness of risk factors and symptoms. Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers, yet thousands of women are still diagnosed each year — often due to missed screenings or lack of access to care

What Is Cervical Cancer?

Cervical cancer begins when abnormal cells in the cervix grow uncontrollably, usually due to long lasting infection with high risk HPV strains. Most HPV infections clear naturally, but persistent infections can cause precancerous changes that may progress to cancer if not detected early.

Why Early Diagnosis Matters

  • Cervical cancer often has no symptoms in early stages, making screening essential.
  • When detected early, cervical cancer is highly treatable, with cure rates approaching 100% for localized disease.

Key Screening Tests

There are two main screening methods:

  • Pap Test (Pap Smear) Detects abnormal cervical cells that may become cancerous.
  • HPV Test Detects high risk HPV strains.

Prevention: HPV Vaccination

The HPV vaccine is the most effective tool for preventing cervical cancer.

  • Recommended for preteens (ages 11–12) ; can start at age 9.
  • Approved for adults up to age 45.
  • Protects against HPV strains responsible for ~90% of cervical cancers.

Risk Factors to Know

Several factors increase cervical cancer risk:

  • Smoking
  • Early sexual activity
  • Multiple sexual partners
  • Weakened immune system
  • Long-term HPV infection
  • History of STIs
  • DES exposure (rare)

Symptoms That Should Not Be Ignored

Cervical cancer may not show symptoms early, but advanced signs include:

  • Unusual vaginal bleeding (after sex, between periods, post-menopause)
  • Pelvic pain
  • Watery or foul-smelling discharge
  • Pain during intercourse

Seek medical care promptly if you experience any of these symptoms.

Improving Access to Screening

Lifestyle Choices That Reduce Risk

  • Quit smoking
  • Practice safe sex
  • Maintain a healthy immune system
  • Stay consistent with routine pelvic exams and screenings
